Best Chocolate Birthday Cake Recipe

– 1 (18.25 ounce) package devil's food cake mix – 1 (3.9 ounce) package instant chocolate pudding mix – 1 cup sour cream – ¾ cup vegetable oil – ¾ cup water – 4 egg – 1 cup semisweet chocolate chip – 1 (16 ounce) package prepared chocolate frosting – 2 tablespoons candy-coated milk chocolate pieces (such as M&M's®), or as desired


Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan with a hole in the center.

In a big bowl, mix together cake mix and pudding mix using an electric mixer. Add sour cream, vegetable oil, and water, and mix them well.  

Then, add eggs one by one, mixing well after each addition. Stir in chocolate chips. Pour this batter into the prepared cake pan. 

Bake it in the oven you preheated earlier until you can poke a toothpick into the center and it comes out clean.  

This should take about 55 to 60 minutes. Let it cool for 10 minutes, then transfer it onto a plate to cool completely for about 20 to 30 minutes more. 

Now, take the lid off the frosting container and put it in the microwave. Heat it on medium power, stirring every 30 seconds until it's soft enough to pour.  

Drizzle this frosting over the cake and sprinkle candy-coated milk chocolate pieces on top.
